Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Certainly a Middle Iranian borrowing, but the underlying formation is uncertain. Asatrian explains it as *āwā̆zāk (carrying away), an agent noun from the preverb *aH- + *waȷ́ʰ- (to carry). For the suffix see -ակ (-ak).

Also from Middle Iranian: Old Georgian ავაზაკი (avazaḳi), Aghwan 𐔰𐔱𐔰𐔵𐔰𐕄 (abazaḳ).
