[edit]Inherited from Old French rifler (“to scrape, scratch”), from Proto-West Germanic *rīfilōn via either Frankish *rīffilōn or Old High German riffilōn (“to tear by rubbing”), akin to rip, ripple. Compare Old English geriflian (“to wrinkle”), Old Norse rifa (“to tear, break”).
