1. A metal cap on the butt end of a weapon shaft, often having a sharp point.
   • 1786, Francis Grose, A Treatise on Ancient Armour and Weapons, page xiii:

     Fig. 3. A battle ax, in the collection of Mr. Rawle. Fig. 4. Its butt end and iron ferril, the staff on which it is fixed is octagonal, and measures five feet four inches.
