Etymology

[edit]

The root is *ապուր- (*apur-, to live, to survive), whose origin is unknown (see below for other words derived from this root). Ačaṙean proposes that it may be of the same origin as the root of պրծանիմ (prcanim).

The primary meaning of the word is "to survive," which is largely lost in modern Armenian ապրել (aprel). In Old Armenian, the sense "to live" or "to be alive" was usually expressed with the word կեամ (keam).
