Etymology

From *ögäy "step-", probably derived from Proto-Turkic *ög (“mother”).

Cognate with Old Uyghur ögäj (“step-”); Tatar үги (ügi, “step-”), Bashkir үгәй (ügəy, “step-”), Kyrgyz өгөй (ögöy, “step-”), Southern Altai ӧй (öy, “step-”), Crimean Tatar ögey (“step-”), Uzbek oʻgay (“step-”), Uyghur ئوگەي (ogey, “step-”), Turkish üvey (“step-”), Khakas ӧӧй (“step-”), etc.
