Etymology

From *ögäy "step-", probably derived from Proto-Turkic *ög (mother).

Cognate with Old Uyghur ögäj (step-); Tatar үги (ügi, step-), Bashkir үгәй (ügəy, step-), Kyrgyz өгөй (ögöy, step-), Southern Altai ӧй (öy, step-), Crimean Tatar ögey (step-), Uzbek oʻgay (step-), Uyghur ئوگەي (ogey, step-), Turkish üvey (step-), Khakas ӧӧй (step-), etc.
