Inherited from Proto-Slavic *čьtivo. By surface analysis, чт- (čt-) +‎ -иво (-ivo, (material)). For the root, compare чту (čtu, I read), чти́вший (čtívšij, having read), etc. For the ending, compare ме́сиво (mésivo, jumble, mush), моло́зиво (molózivo, colostrum (type of breast milk)).
