[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *čьtivo. By surface analysis, чт- (čt-) + -иво (-ivo, “(material)”). For the root, compare чту (čtu, “I read”), чти́вший (čtívšij, “having read”), etc. For the ending, compare ме́сиво (mésivo, “jumble, mush”), моло́зиво (molózivo, “colostrum (type of breast milk)”).
