From Proto-Mordvinic *čəčə~*čičə, inherited from Proto-Uralic *śečä (“uncle”). Cognate with Moksha щ- (šč-) in щене (ščene, “uncle”), Finnish setä, Northern Sami čeahci, Western Mari чӱчӧ (čüčö), Udmurt ӵуж (čuž).
