Etymology

Probably from че- (če-) +‎ гъ́ртам (gǎ́rtam, to turn, to tug) (obsolete). Related to Serbo-Croatian гр́тати (to bring together).

Compare also Turkish loanword чaкъртя (čakǎrtja, to vex, to bug) (dialectal) < Ottoman Turkish چكركه (grasshopper), from چاغرمق (to sing, to summon) (?).
