From улттӑ (ulttă, six) +‎ -мӗш (-mĕš, ordinal suffix), compare Bulgar [script needed] (altış), [script needed] (altışi, sixth).[1]

Cognate with Khalaj altamıncı, Turkish altıncı, Uzbek oltinchi, Bashkir алтынсы (altınsı) and Yakut алтыс (altıs).
