From тӑваттӑ (tăvattă, four) +‎ -мӗш (-mĕš, ordinal suffix), compare Bulgar [script needed] (tüwetim, fourth).[1]

Cognate with Khalaj tö̂rtminci, Turkish dördüncü, Uzbek toʻrtinchi, Bashkir дүртенсе (dürtense) and Yakut төрдүс (tördüs).
