From виҫҫӗ (viśśĕ, three) +‎ -мӗш (-mĕš, ordinal suffix), compare Bulgar [script needed] (wecim, third).[1]

Cognate with Khalaj ü̂çminci, Turkish üçüncü, Uzbek uchinchi, Bashkir өсөнсө (ösönsö) and Yakut үһүс (ühüs).
