Inherited from Old Slovak sukňa, from Proto-Slavic *sukъňa. Cognates include Czech sukně, Macedonian сукња (suknja), Polish suknia, Serbo-Croatian сукња / suknja, Slovak sukňa, Belarusian and Ukrainian су́кня (súknja). By surface analysis, сукац (sukac, to twist) +‎ -ня (-nja).
