Etymology

[edit]

From an earlier стопа́н (stopán) (dialectal) +‎ -ин (-in) (agentive suffix). Formally reflects Proto-Slavic *stopan(in)ъ which yielded Old Church Slavonic стопанъ (stopanŭ), Serbo-Croatian стопан, Macedonian стопан (stopan) and was loaned into Romanian stăpân, but beyond that - of uncertain origin.

Proposed etymologies include:

Noun

[edit]

стопа́нин (stopáninm (feminine стопа́нка)

  1. master, landlord, householder, manager of owndom, husband (in its archaic sense)
    Synonyms: домакин (domakin), съдържател (sǎdǎržatel)
  2. (dialectal) home spirit, protector of property (mythological)
