Albanian

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Only found in some Balkan languages. Compare Bulgarian стопанин (stopanin) and also the related Romanian stăpân, Megleno-Romanian stăpǫn. Possibly linked to an early form of Albanian shtëpi (house) or its derivative. See also Greek σπίτι (spíti). Might be from Old Church Slavonic стопанъ (stopanŭ); compare Macedonian стопан (stopan) ‘master, owner’.[1]
