[edit]From Proto-Mordvinic *śinďəms, likely inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćäŋkɜ~*śäŋkɜ (“to break, cut”), whence Udmurt чигыны (ćigyny), Hungarian szeg (“to hem, fringe”). Other possible cognates include Finnish sänki (“stubble”).
