Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *śinďəms, likely inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćäŋkɜ~*śäŋkɜ (to break, cut), whence Udmurt чигыны (ćigyny), Hungarian szeg (to hem, fringe). Other possible cognates include Finnish sänki (stubble).
