Etymology

The initial element силь- derives from Proto-Permic *śu̇l-, ultimately borrowed from a Turkic language, from Proto-Turkic *yẹl (wind) (compare Chuvash ҫил (śil), Tatar җил (cil) and Bashkir ел (yel)). Cognates include Komi-Zyrian сьыв (śyv, storm). The latter element derives from тӧл (töl, wind).
