Etymology

Archaic word for witness from Proto-Slavic *sъvědъkъ (possibly *sъvědokъ[1]), superseded by Bulgarian свидетел (svidetel) (a loanword from Russian). Formed from the obsolete вям (vjam, to witness, to have seen) +‎ -ок (-ok).
