Etymology

Borrowed from Russian свиде́тель (svidételʹ), formally an agent noun of the obsolete сведя (svedja, to witness, to know) +‎ -тел (-tel) (in Russian, OCS -ѣ- sometimes transforms into -и-). Replaced the native Bulgarian сведок (svedok).
