Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic противъ (protivŭ), from Proto-Slavic *protivъ. For the dropping of final -ў (-ŭ) (as in the alternate form and inherited compound words beginning with праціў- (praciŭ-)), compare also Czech proti, Ukrainian про́ти (próty). Other cognates include Polish przeciw, Russian про́тив (prótiv). Related to or perhaps derives су́праць (súpracʹ), супро́ць (suprócʹ).
