Borrowed from French porte-épée (swordbelt). Ultimately from Latin portō (whence multiple descendants, compare close related English portfolio, Russian портфе́ль (portfélʹ), Russian портфо́лио (portfólio)) + Latin spatha (whence English spade, Russian шпа́га (špága)), further from Ancient Greek σπάθη (spáthē).
