[edit]Borrowed from French porte-monnaie. Ultimately from Latin portō (whence multiple descendants, compare close related English portfolio, Russian портфе́ль (portfélʹ), Russian портфо́лио (portfólio)) + Latin monēta (whence English money, English mint, Russian моне́та (monéta)).
