Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dušiti (to suffocate, to choke). Cognate with Belarusian душы́ць (dušýcʹ), Russian души́ть (dušítʹ), Czech dusit, Polish dusić, Bulgarian душа́ (dušá), Slovene dušiti.
