Etymology

The word has been compared with Proto-Slavic *gorxъ (“pea”) and Latin furfur (“bran, husks of grain”), but this is formally untenable. A derivation from χείρ (kheír, “hand”) and δρέπω (drépō, “to pluck”) is folk-etymological. The variations show that the word is Pre-Greek.
