Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- πάθνη (páthnē)
Etymology
[edit]Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (“to tie”), the same root of Sanskrit बन्धति (bandhati) and Proto-Germanic *bindaną. The same suffix is recognized in Gaulish benna and Welsh ben (“cart”). However, Beekes finds this theory improbable and suggests a Pre-Greek origin.
