Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *tr̥-ped-ih₂- (“having three feet”), from *tr̥- (“three”, combining form) + *pṓds (“foot”). The first element is conventionally linked to *kʷtur- (“four”, combining form) (which is explicitly favored by Beekes over the connection to "three"),[1] but Sihler (1995, p. 411) points out that early tables had three legs, not four.[2] Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀵𐀟𐀼 (to-pe-za).
