[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *kʷítis, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷéytis, from *kʷey- (“to pay, avenge”) (whence τίνω (tínō) and τίω (tíō)). By surface analysis, τίω (tíō) + -σῐς (-sis).
