[edit]From Proto-Hellenic *kʷinumi, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷey- (“to pay”). Cognate with ποινή (poinḗ), Sanskrit चयते (cáyate) and Avestan 𐬗𐬌𐬐𐬀𐬫𐬀𐬝 (cikayat̰).
