Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek σῐδηρῑ́της (sidērī́tēs, of iron) or learned borrowing from French sidérite, from Latin sideritis < Ancient Greek σῐδηρῖτῐς (sidērîtis), freminine of σῐδηρῑ́της (sidērī́tēs). By surface analysis, σίδηρ(ος) (sídir(os)) +‎ -ίτης (-ítis, suffix for masculines). Doublet of σιδερίτης (siderítis).
