[edit]Inherited from Koine Greek σῐδηρῖτῐς (sidērîtis, “sideritis, ironwort”),[1][2] feminine of Ancient Greek σῐδηρῑ́της (sidērī́tēs, “of iron”), with change of ⟨ηρ⟩ > ⟨ερ⟩ [er] -see: σίδερο n (sídero, “iron”)- and modern masculine suffix -ίτης (-ítis).[3] [4] Doublet of σιδηρίτης (sidirítis).
The sense for herb, since Byzantine Greek σιδερίτης (siderítēs), alternative form for σιδηρῖτις f (sidērîtis) and σιδηρίτης m (sidērítēs).[5]
