From Koine Greek παγίδιον (pagídion, snare, trap),[1][2] from παγίς (pagís, snare, trap) +‎ -ῐ́δῐον (-ĭ́dĭon, diminutive suffix), the former from Ancient Greek πάγη (págē, snare, trap), owing to the ribcage's resemblance to a metal trap.
