[edit]From the modern ξεψυχ(ώ) (“literarlly: the soul comes out of me”) + -άω (-áo). From the mediaeval Byzantine Greek ξεψυχῶ < ἐξεψυχῶ (exepsukhô), from Koine Greek ἐκψύχω (ekpsúkhō, “ancient sense: faint”). The ἐκ- (ek-) > ξε- (xe-). See ψυχή (psukhḗ, “soul”).
