Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἐμπορῶ (emporô), ἠμπορῶ (ēmporô), ultimately from Ancient Greek εὐπορέω (euporéō, to thrive, prosper, find means) (with a folk etymology connection to ἔμπορος m (émporos, merchant)).
