[edit]Etymology
[edit]Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *leh₁w- (“stone”), though Beekes is skeptical and suspects a Pre-Greek origin; cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀨𐀁𐀊 (ra-e-ja, “stone”), Proto-Albanian *laurā (Albanian lerë (“boulder”)), Proto-Celtic *lausā (“stone”) (whence also Proto-Celtic *līwos (“stone”) and Old Irish lie (“stone”)),[1] and possibly Old Armenian լեառն (leaṙn, “mountain”).
