Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *leh₁w- (stone), though Beekes is skeptical and suspects a Pre-Greek origin; cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀨𐀁𐀊 (ra-e-ja, stone), Proto-Albanian *laurā (Albanian lerë (boulder)), Proto-Celtic *lausā (stone) (whence also Proto-Celtic *līwos (stone) and Old Irish lie (stone)),[1] and possibly Old Armenian լեառն (leaṙn, mountain).
