Inherited from Byzantine Greek λαρδί(ο)ν (lardí(o)n, lard), diminutive of Koine Greek λάρδος (lárdos), from Latin lārdum/lāridum (bacon fat), perhaps borrowed from Ancient Greek λαρινός (larinós, fatty).
