Etymology

Possibly from a nasalized variant of Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (to shine), but problematic due to said nasalization. Related to Scottish Gaelic loisg (to burn), Welsh llachar (glow), Hittite [script needed] (lapp-, to glow, flash), Latvian lāpa (torch, flame).[1]
