Etymology
[edit]Possibly from a nasalized variant of Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (“to shine”), but problematic due to said nasalization. Related to Scottish Gaelic loisg (“to burn”), Welsh llachar (“glow”), Hittite [script needed] (lapp-, “to glow, flash”), Latvian lāpa (“torch, flame”).[1]
