Inherited from Byzantine Greek κουφαίνω (kouphaínō), from Koine Greek κωφαίνω (kōphaínō), with vowel alteration per κωφός (kofós)κουφός (koufós).[1] By surface analysis, κουφ(ός) (kouf(ós)) +‎ -αίνω (-aíno)
