Etymology

Learned borrowing from Byzantine Greek κατεδαφίζω (katedaphízō, to dash to earth). By surface analysis, κατ- (kat-) +‎ έδαφ(ος) (édaf(os)) +‎ -ίζω (-ízo).[1]
