[edit]Inherited from Byzantine Greek καβάλα (kabála, “mare; equestrianism, horsemanship; cavalry”), borrowed from Venetan cavala or Late Latin caballa. The adverbialization of the noun occurred analogously to γραμμή (grammí).[1][2]
