[edit]From German Zirkon (“zircon mineral”) via French zircon, formed in the 1780s from Arabic زَرْقُون (zarqūn, “zircon, minium”), from Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zlgʿn /zargōn/), from Classical Persian زرگون (zargōn)/Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zlgʿn /zargōn/, “red lead”), from Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam (“gold”). Doublet of ζιργκόν (zirgkón).
