[edit]Inherited from Byzantine Greek γουβάς (goubás, “pit, cave”), further origin unclear. Akin to Albanian guvë, Aromanian guvã (“hole, cavity”). Ultimately either from Albanian or a byform of Latin cavea (“hollow, cavity”).
