[edit]From Byzantine Greek γαλάζιος (galázios), from Koine Greek κάλαϊς (kálaïs, “turquoise-like stone”), probably from Ancient Greek καλάϊνος (kaláïnos, “blue-green, bluish (esp. of stones, earthenware, etc.)”).
