From Ancient Greek ἀνάθεμα (anáthema, something dedicated, especially dedicated to evil), from ἀνατίθημι (anatíthēmi, I set upon, offer as a votive gift), from ἀνά (aná, upon) + τίθημι (títhēmi, I put, place).
