Etymology
[edit]From Ancient Greek ἀδελφή (adelphḗ), feminine form of ἀδελφός (adelphós, “brother”); from Proto-Hellenic *hə- (“same, together”) from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥- (“together, one”) + *gʷelbʰ- (“womb”), equivalent to ἁ- (ha-, “same”, copulative prefix) + δελφύς (delphús, “womb”).
