[edit]Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἕνω(σις) (hénō(sis)) + modern ending -ση (-si), the former a nominal formation from ενώνω (enóno, “to unite”). The modern sense of "association of companies or states" is a semantic loan from French union.[1]
