Etymology 1

From Ancient Greek Ἐρῠθραίᾱ (Eruthraíā) (adjective), feminine of adjective Ἐρυθραῖος (Eruthraîos), from ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, red). Substantivised by ellipsis of a noun e.g. χώρα f (khṓra, land, country) for the peninsula of Asia Minor where Ἐρυθραί f (Eruthraí, the city of Erythrae) was situated.

Borrowed from Italian Eritrea,[1] from Ancient Greek Ἐρῠθραίᾱ (Eruthraíā), feminine of the adjective Ἐρυθραῖος (Eruthraîos), from ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, red). As in the phrase Ἐρυθρὰ θάλασσα (Eruthrà thálassa) (in Herodous Ἐρυθρὴ θάλασσα (Eruthrḕ thálassa) literally Red Sea.
