Etymology

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *d(ɯə)ŋʔ (to receive). Cognate with Old Mon dūṅ (modern Mon ဒုၚ် (tɜ̀ŋ, to receive, to accept)).

Attested as đợng in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
