Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *taŋʔ (bitter), from Proto-Austroasiatic *ʦaŋʔ (bitter). Cognate with Bahnar tăng (bitter), Pacoh atáng (bitter), Khasi kthang (bitter), Bolyu tɕaŋ⁵³ and Mon က္တၚ် (kətɛŋ, bitter).
