From Old Swedish ø̄ka, from Old Norse auka, from Proto-Germanic *aukaną, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewg-. Akin to English eke, Danish øge, Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐌺𐌰𐌽 (aukan), Latin augeō.
