Inherited from Middle High German ërtbere, from Old High German erdberi, from Proto-West Germanic *erþubaʀi, from Proto-Germanic *erþōbazją, from *erþō + *bazją. By surface analysis, Äerd (“ground”) + Beer (“berry”).
Cognate with German Erdbeere and Luxembourgish Äerdbier.
