Etymology

From an older *zvaigzde (via an intermediate form *zvaigzdne), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źwaisdā́ˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰweygʷ-, *ǵʰwoygʷ- (shine; to shine), from *ǵʰwey-, *ǵʰey- (to shine) with an extra . Cognates include Lithuanian žvaigždė̃, Proto-Slavic *gvězda (Old Church Slavonic звѣзда (zvězda), Russian звезда́ (zvezdá), Belarusian звязда́ (zvjazdá), Ukrainian звізда́ (zvizdá), Czech hvězda, Polish gwiazda.[1]
